August 6 - On Vacation - UPDATED CROSS INDEX

I will be on vacation through August 14. Vacation? I’m taking three small children, 2000 miles from home, to a location with rotary phones and no internet access, and only one TV. Chances are that I will not be able to update my blog. I will probably gain enough material to get me through this year and next however.

My regular blogging will return around August 15.

As I approach five months as a BLOGGER. I thought I would offer a Subject / Topic Cross Index to any new readers to catch up.

Three days per week are devoted to specific categories: Pet Peeve Monday, Where Are They Now? Wednesday, and Friday Funny. In between are an eclectic bag of musings, stories, similes, homilies, anecdotes, etc.

By the way, if you would like to receive an email notification of new blog postings, simply send me an email request and I can add you to an automated notification system: Jay's email

Here is a summary of my blogs to date. Asterisks represent blogs that have received interesting feedback (always favorable, of course) from readers.

June 16 - CROSS INDEX

As I approach three months as a BLOGGER. I thought I would offer a Subject / Topic Cross Index to any new readers to catch up.

I will be gone next week on a 200-mile bike ride. Why, I’m not sure, but I hear you get a free shirt if you complete the ride. My blogging will return on June 27.

Think of the next week as “rerun week”. Better yet, remember how TV shows try to sell an episode as new, when it is only a compilation of flashbacks to previous shows. Friends was famous for this tactic. Sounds a lot like a Pet Peeve, huh? Which is a nice seque to a summary of the last three months in Blogosphere.

Three days of the week are devoted to specific categories: Pet Peeve Monday, Where Are They Now? Wednesday, and Friday Funny. In between are an eclectic bag of musings, stories, similes, homilies, anecdotes, etc.

April 21, 2008 - Vacation

My apologies to all of the Jabberwockers out there.

This month has been the perfect storm with Little League, the IRS, and a Golf Vacation all happening in April.

This week is a Vacation week, as I will be renewing my relationship with the sand traps of Myrtle Beach.

I already have some pent-up PET PEEVES. I’ll unleash them in full fury next Monday, April 28.

December 18 - Pet Peeve Monday - Year End Compilations

This week’s PET PEEVE MONDAY is Year-End Compilations.  It happens every December:

  • The year in review in music, sports, news, literary existentialists, etc.

  • Top 100 Song Countdowns

  • Ten Worst Dressed Celebrities

  • The Ten News Stories That Changed the World

My favorite is the photo montages they play at the end of newscasts accompanied by sad, sad music of all the people that died that year.  How do they decide what order to scroll the pictures of the poor departed souls?  Is it alphabetically, chronologically, or by that person’s perceived level of importance?

I use it as an exercise to practice my math.  I yell out the ages of the person that died.  Quick, 2006-1934?  71, no 72.  Actually, to be honest it depends on their actual birthday and death day.

With next week being Christmas, this is the last true Monday of the year.  So ironically, I will provide a summary or compilation, if you must, of my 2006 Pet Peeves.

I’ve also added a quick link to the right side menu, so that you can be reminded at any time during the year as to what bothers me.

Here is a summary of my 2006 PET PEEVES.  Asterisks represent blogs that have received interesting feedback (always favorable, of course) from readers.

December 20 - Where Are They Now? Year-End Review

This week’s WHERE ARE THEY NOW? WEDNESDAY (WATN) is an update about previous postings in 2006.

I first provided updates on three previous blogs about Jennifer Wilbanks, Katie Couric, and Star Jones on October 11.

Now, as my last WATN blog of 2006, I’ll provide an update on other blog subjects.

March 29 – Illegal Aliens – Surprisingly, Congress, the opposite of Progress, has done nothing on Immigration Reform. Thanks, or should I say Gracious.

April 5 – Katie Couric – Katie is now consistently third in the nightly news ratings, as I predicted on September 5. She even finished seventh in the Los Angeles market, behind Seinfeld, Friends, and Knight Rider.

April 18 – George Michael – George has been arrested two more times since I profiled him. If he would only be more offensive or racist like Mel Gibson or Michael Richards and less gay like Lance Bass or Clay Akins, he might get more press and be worthy of a come back.

May 2 - Five People I’ll Meet in Hell – Star Jones – Star was fired from “The View” in July. I also featured her on a WATN on June 28. To date, she has not been heard from again.

May 9 – O.J Simpson - We almost made it through the year without an OJ sighting. However, this lower than scum parasite tried to cash in on his murderous action.

June 2 – John Kerry – Kerry decided to be in the spotlight even though he wasn’t running, as I updated on November 1. Kerry offended everyone with his election eve joke about military intelligence. Please run in 2008, please.

June 8 – Jason Larue – The Reds finally read my blog and decided to trade this loser. Unfortunately, it was 3 seasons, 38 passed balls, 320 strikeouts, and $10 million too late.

July 3 – Vince Vaughn- Jennifer Anniston – Pulling a page from the “I can’t believe they didn’t stay together” file, these two perennial role models broke up. Huh, if these two can’t make it, is there hope for any of us?

July 17 – Pope Benedict – He did more than I could ever hope to accomplish. He offended over a billion people as I updated on September 15. I guess he isn’t infallible after all. How do you say “My Bad” in Latin?

July 31 – Pet Peeve – Children on Phones - I’m still getting calls from children, STOP IT.

August 4 – OSU is #1 – OSU started as #1 and through 12 games is still # 1. GO BUCKS.

August 19 - John Mark Carr – He was let go after it was determined he had lied about his involvement in the Jon Benet Ramsey murder case. The things that people will do to get an upgrade to First Class when flying. Sick.

August 28 - Award Show Gift Bags - The Oscars has decided in December 2006 to no longer provide $100K gift bags to presenters because of IRS issues.

August 29 – Hurricanes - The National Weather Service predicted 2006 would be a record-breaking year for named Hurricanes. Turns out, Al Gore and all were wrong. Zero hurricanes hit the US in 2006. I guess the wind in their sails was just a bunch of hot air.

October 2- The Therapy Excuse - I commented about people going into therapy after being caught being bad. Since my blog, Michael Richards and Miss USA also took that route. I wish that excuse was available when I got a “D” on a biology exam in 1978.

November 6 – Vote FOR Issue 5 - I encouraged all to vote for Issue 5 and it passed overwhelmingly. The problem was that people decide to break the law anyway as I detailed on my December 11 blog.

Here is an index of my Where Are They Now? Wednesday? Blogs.

April 28, 2014 - PPM - Botched Executions

This week's PET PEEVE MONDAY (PPM) is the termed "botched execution."

This past week, the State of Oklahoma attempted to execute a prisoner. Apparently the lethal drug dosage was incorrect and the prisoner was still alive after 45 minutes.  The inmate had a heart attack and subsequently died.

He may have been actually SCARED TO DEATH.

I don't consider this a "botched execution,” he DIED.  That was the desired outcome and that is what happened.

What went wrong is that this person was on death row for 15 years, getting 3 meals a day, and getting health care, all on the tax payer's dime.

Now the state of Oklahoma is going to delay all future executions and spend money figuring out what went wrong - AGAIN all at the tax payer’s expense!!!

On June 3, 1999, the now properly dead inmate had kidnapped 3 people at a house in Perry, Oklahoma.  He beat and raped one victim, Stephanie Nieman.  He then shot her twice and buried her alive as she gasped for air.

Tell me again about who had a more traumatic death?

My PET PEEVE is that we are too worried about the health and welfare of the criminal that we forget about the victim.

A better death sentence is that we tell the convict that they will die at some future date, and time, and method, but it is will be a surprise.

It may be by sniper when they are in the park.  It may be while they are sleeping in the dark.

It may be on a train, or in the rain.

It may be late at night or by the dawn’s early light.

The point is….. it is not IF, but WHEN.

The guilty should try to live with that thought, UNTIL YOU DON’T!!!

July 10, 2008- Loser of the Week - Barack's Boys

This week’s LOSER OF THE WEEK has got to be Barack Obama.

When he was talking about CHANGE, I’m not sure he and the Reverend Jesse Jackson were on the same page.

Jackson told a confident (and the entire listening world) yesterday that he would cut off Barack’s “family jewels” because of their philosophical differences concerning a non-core election issue. The issue, itself, has been lost in the media hype.

As a religious scholar and ordained Reverend myself, (see April 28, 2008 blog), I can ony assume that The Reverend Jackson must have been quoting from the Book of Lorena (as in Bobbitt). The biblical reference of an “eye for an eye” from Exodus 21:23-27 is apparently not anatomically correct enough for THE Reverend Jackson.

I have previously blogged about THE Reverend Jesse Jackson in 2006, 2007 and earlier this year.

Barack has got be thinking, “With supporters like this, maybe I should only take public financing."

Was Barack looking to secure the emasculated, castrated, dis-engendered, American vote? He HAS been pandering to small demographics since he secured the democratic nomination.

While Jackson’s colorful phraseology is news, I would have thought that Hillary would have announced this political strategy years ago when dealing with her most ardent supporter, her husband.

At any rate, I think this is too large of a price to pay to be President. No wonder this year’s nominees are equally, less than attractive. The Mount Rushmore Reconstruction Project can take another prolonged holiday.

Barack Obama, you are my LOSER OF THE WEEK.

With supporters like Jesse Jackson, you won’t need supporters, athletic supporters that is.

April 28, 2008 - PPM - Religious Non-Leaders

I’m back from a week of sun and golf on the South Carolina shores. As they said about Richard Nixon in 1968, “I’m tanned, rested, and ready to run.”

I was able to accumulate many Pet Peeves on the long drive to Myrtle Beach. Here is the most topical.

This week’s PET PEEVE MONDAY is about Insertion of Religious Leaders into the Political Process.

This past week, Barack Obama’s “Spiritual Advisor”, Reverend Jeremiah Wright, single-handily derailed Obama’s White House quest. Wright did what the Clinton machine could not accomplish. Wright got Obama off-message. No more Hope and Change. It’s Denounce and Reject. Not exactly the uplifting message that sells.

The Reverend Al Sharpton tried to insert himself into the news by saying he could “close down New York City” in reaction to a judge’s ruling on the death of an African-American that was shot by NYC cops. As Sharpton again played the race card from the bottom of the deck, he neglected to mention that 2 of the 3 cops in the questionable shooting were black. No need to let facts get in the way of your race rhetoric.

Republican candidate Mitt Romney had to speak to the masses that thought Mormonism was a cult. Why does it matter?

What were the religious beliefs on George Washington and Abraham Lincoln? Did you know that Thomas Jefferson proclaimed his own religious commitment by stating he belonged to a sect with just one member? Jefferson considered much of the new testament of the Bible to be lies.

I doubt that Jefferson could be elected today given those thoughts.

Ever since Pat Robertson and the Reverend Jesse Jackson tried to trade their stunted religious careers for improbable political aspirations, religion and politics have been the new Odd Couple.

Billy Graham must be rolling over in his hospital bed. He was the “Spiritual Advisor" for several Presidents. He never felt the need to step in front of the camera.

It really PEEVES me that our constitution talks about the SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE, but the news media can’t make the same distinction.

Personally, I found a way to eliminate any embarrassing revelation about my past religious involvements should I run for office.

This past October, I became an ordained clergy member. I did an Internet search. I matched up my general feelings, my deep held beliefs, and a PayPal limit of $20. I am now a licensed clergyman for the Church of Spiritual Humanism.

As an ordained clergy member I can legally perform religious ceremonies and rituals like weddings, funerals, benedictions, etc.

As Spiritual Humanists we believe that every person has innate right to make a spiritual connection to the rest of the cosmos. Our premise is simple:

All humans have an inalienable right and duty to practice their own religious traditions. Spiritual Humanism allows everyone to fuse their individual religious practices onto the foundation of scientific humanist inquiry.

We accept people from any religious background and recognize the validity of all peaceful religious practices and behaviors as being helpful and necessary in developing the spiritual nature of humanity.

No eternal damnation, no 72 virgins.

In the future, I would respectfully like to be referred to as The Reverend J. Jay Lewis.

As George Carlin once said, “I have as much authority as the Pope, I just don't have as many people who believe it.”

April 28 - Friday Funny

Stiffs And Slices
From thesmokinggun.com
A Domino's deliveryman used a car to transport corpses to funeral parlors when he wasn't using the vehicle to deliver pizzas. Last Friday, a Police Department officer in Pennsylvania pulled over a 1993 Buick after noticing the vehicle did not have an inspection sticker. Additionally, William Bethel, 24, was driving with a suspended license, so cops informed him that the vehicle was going to be impounded. According to a police report, when officers began taking an inventory of the station wagon, they noticed a stretcher in the rear of the vehicle where "pizzas were sitting to be delivered. Asked about the items, Bethel explained that when he finished delivering Domino's pizzas, "he transports deceased bodies in the same vehicle for a funeral home." A police check with local health officials determined that the use of the car for stiffs and slices did not violate county ordinances. Bethel, who was not arrested, is facing $400 in fines for driving with a suspended license and operating a vehicle without an inspection certificate.

This hits close to home for me. In high school I worked three jobs one summer while saving money for college. McDonald’s, Dominos, and the Zanesville Ambulance Service. I delivered pizzas for Dominos and picked up dead bodies ($35 a piece) for the city of Zanesville. I was unable to multi-task with my car because I drove a 1969 Volkswagen bug with a very small backseat.

April 29 - Baseball Today

Zack ran his pitching record to 7-1 with his fifth complete game of the season as Fairmont beat Belmont 12-2.

At the same time, his little brother, Jack, 5, began his own baseball journey. It was Jack’s first organized game. The Blue Sharks tied the Green Gators 28-28 (in T-Ball no one is ever out). Jack’s favorite part of the game was the post game snack.

March 28 - One Year Anniversary

March 28th will mark my ONE-YEAR ANNIVERSARY as a blogger.

When I retired, I found no one would read my memos anymore. My hand puppet interpretation on the pitfalls of the 2nd Amendment was really lost on the Kindergarteners at my son’s school.

I needed a release for my pent-up thoughts, so I started a blog, WWJD (What Would Jay Do.)

Within my blog, my A- personality took over.

I added structure to the blog through regular entries, such as:
PET PEEVE MONDAY
WHERE ARE THEY NOW? WEDNESDAY
and
FRIDAY FUNNY

Many of you sent me direct emails of agreement rather than posting comments onto the blog. Do you not want others to know that you have tasted the kool-aid and it was good?

Of the comments that are posted to the blog, 98% are positive. Either way, I always enjoy the feedback. Criticism drowns some people. I’m as buoyant as they come.

My Dad once told me I was homely and adopted. He also told me I was brought into the family as the third child so that he wouldn’t have to go to Vietnam. He also told me I was one-eighth Cherokee. I must have been the first and only albino Cherokee.

My Business Entrepreneur Instructor my senior year at Ohio State gave me a C on my Business Plan to turn apartments into condos. Les Wexner, founder of The Limited, accepted the plans and made millions. My instructor is now in jail on Insider Trading charges.

Quentin Tarantino couldn’t make this stuff up.

Do you think a disagreeable remark or a negative comment would cause irreparable harm?

In publishing this blog, I’ve yet to suffer from writer’s block. Then again, it doesn’t pay very well, so the pressure is quite low.

If nothing else, my typing skills have progressed to the proficiency level of most third graders.

In Year 2, I’m thinking about some changes. Solutions Saturday may replace Friday Funny. I would be willing to publish a Guest Blog, if some one would ask.

I’m off on vacation until early April. No blogs, just sun, surf, and some golf.

As the hungry Italians say on their way out the door, “Chow.”

July 5 - Where are They Now? Wednesday - The Other Guy

It worked for the Brady Bunch, Starsky & Hutch, and Charlie’s Angels. Why not for Miami Vice? These vintage TV shows moved to the big screen and made millions as movies. Miami Vice, the Movie is set for release on July 28.

Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx are reprising the roles of Don Johnson and that OTHER GUY. Which brings us to this week’s WHERE ARE THEY NOW? WEDNESDAY.

What ever happened to the OTHER GUY, Philip Michael Thomas? And why does he have three names? Only serial killers are supposed to have three names

He is a famous OTHER GUY. Other, OTHER GUYS include:

Larry Wilcox (Jon Baker-second fiddle to Erik Estrada’s Ponch (now pronounced paunch).

Andrew Ridgeley – the sober and working stiff side of Wham and George Michael (see April 18 Blog).

Miami Vice lasted 114 episodes on NBC from 1984-1989. Sonny Crockett (Don Johnson) was a rough-edged Miami vice detective who lived on a sailboat called "St. Vitus' Dance", that was guarded by his dyspeptic pet alligator, Elvis, named after the singer Elvis Presley. Ricardo Tubbs (Philip Micheal-Thomas) was a black ex-New York street cop who had to come South to find the drug dealer who murdered his brother. They were an unlikely but effective team, working undercover in Miami.

Don Johnson was a rough looking but cool as a cucumber with his expensive pastel sports jacket worn over a T-shirt, with stubbly beard and no socks. I actually still have a “Miami Vice outfit” that I like to wear on the cool summer nights on the Ohio River. On the right is a picture of me on a night out on the town.

His partner, Ricardo Tubbs was the opposite, a clean cut individual who was always armed with weapons for any situation that came up and usually sometimes to bail Crockett out of a tight problem with some vicious murderer or ruthless drug lord.

We all know that Don Johnson went on to bigger and better things like Nash Bridges on the USA Network. But what happened to the OTHER GUY?
Here is what I was able to find out about Phil.

He was born in Columbus OH in 1949. (off to a good start)

He has at least eight children with 3 different live in girlfriends.

A bank foreclosed on his house in 1998. This is not surprising given the cost of childcare these days.

Worked for many years doing psychic phone commercials for Traffix, Inc. He sued them for over $12M in unpaid royalties. You would have thought he would have seen that coming. Traffix should counter-sue him for being a poor psychic.

Here is a personal quote from a 1985 Playboy. As they say, I buy it for the articles.

"I've become greened, like money. I respect the position. I'm enthusiastic, as opposed to excited. Enthusiasm comes from the Greek entheos, which means "God-inspired"...I recommend fame, but with fortune. Otherwise, it's a bitch."

I’m not entirely sure what he meant, but he had me at “greened”.

I believe all will end well for Phillip Michael Thomas. He is rumored to be playing a pivotal role at the opening night gala for the release of Miami Vice, the Movie. He’ll be parking the cars.
