May 28, 2012 - PPM - Spelling Bees

This week, we are "celebrating" the 87th Annual National Spelling Bee.

My PET PEEVE is why do we still have speeling bees. With the emergence of technology, we now have spell check and auto correct functions. If you ever see a text message from anyone born after 1990, they can't spell anyway.

Now, because we have 500 TV channels to choose from, the National Spellnig Bee is televised on the ESPN network. Really? Aren't there more Kardashians that we can watch?

"Tiger Moms" are making their children practice spelllong 4 hours a day. For what? Only the winner of the Bee receives a scholarship. No one has ever been hired because they were a good speller. When I was hiring people and reviewing resumes, I only wish I would have come across an prospective hire that had "Spellin Champion" on their resume.

I would have offered them a job if they could spelll "their." When they would respond "t-h-e-r-e". I would "oops, sorry, maybe you should have studied "interviewing techniques and tactics" instead of speeeling.

In order to retain my amateur journalism credentials, I must offer full disclosure. I was the second grade spelling champion for St. Nicholas grade school in 1969. I don't remember advancing to a county or state-wide competition. I do recall that I was allowed to advance to the the third grade, and the rest is just history.

Bottom line, let's teach our children what is important in life. i would like to see a "Personal Finance Bee". You could not spend more than you earn in order to advance in the competition.

Unfortunately, the winner of the Finance Bee could not visit the White House, as the President would be ineligible to participate.

May 25, 2012 - Friday Funny - Memorial Day 2212

This week's FRIDAY FUNNY is the possible scenario we may face in 2212, especially if the spending practices of our current President is allowed to continue.

Let's take care of our Veterans.

May 11, 2012 - Take Your Daughter to Work Week

I missed "Take Your Daughter to Work Day" when I was on golf trip with some friends 2 weeks ago.

I decided to make it up to Sophia by declaring that this WEEK would be Take Your Daughter to Work WEEK. Since I don't actually have a job, I had to let her just tag-a-long with me this week.

Monday - Lunch and video games at Game Works at Newport of the Levee.

Tuesday - Shopping at Apple Store, Bose Store, and Brookstone Store at the Kenwood Mall.

Wednesday - Pool and Spa water testing, followed by golf. Sophia learned the terms "mulligan', "foot wedge" and "Member drops."

Thursday - Went to River Downs race track to practice math and probabilities.

Friday - We completed the arts and craft requirement by going to "Just Doodling" and painting ceramic mugs and flower pots in time for Mother's Day.

Coincidently, I picked the best week to home school my daughter. It is also "Teacher Appreciation Week."

May 11, 2012 - Friday Funny - Losing My Religion

This week's FRIDAY FUNNY is about religion.

Based on the below pictures, I may have to give Scientology another look.

I wonder if my credits from being the Alter Boy of the Year (1975-1977) and a currently licensed Reverend will transfer?

May 8, 2012 - So Long Old Friend

My neighborhood "Cheers" that has been my home for a couple of lunches and a few "happy hours" each week is closing today. I found the place the first day I moved to Cincinnati from California 17 years ago.

I am now forced to find a new establishment worthy of my business. If I was to write a Personal Ad for a new place it would read:

"Mild mannered, early middle aged man seeks the stool at the end of the bar for one hour, two days a week. No conversation is needed. No need to listen to my problems. Having a one stool buffer zone between myself and other patrons is very appreciated. I may look like a people person, but I'm not.

I enjoy a good cheeseburger on toasted buns, no lettuce or pickles, EVER. WiFi is nice, but not a must. I'm a great tipper.

References provided upon request. Serious inquiries only."

Here is the picture of "my" stool that I was awarded today for my patronage. I can bring it to my new place if necessary.

So long, Blarney Stone. You and your wonderful staff will be missed.
