This week's PET PEEVE MONDAY (PPM) concerns High School Graduations.
It is that time of the year when I receive "High School Graduation" announcements from people I haven't seen in years. In some instances, I didn't even know they had children.
It comes across as a naked cash grab. I've always been a huge supporter of higher education, but it's HIGH SCHOOL!!!
Here are my rules:
Kindergarten Graduation: I don't offer gifts. I don't attend, NOT EVEN FOR MY OWN KIDS.
Grade School Graduation: I don't offer gifts. I will only attend my OWN kid's ceremony as long as there are no schedule conflict.
High School Graduation: No gifts, unless I am the God Father or biological parent. I attended my oldest child's and was dismayed by the "hooting and hollering" from the parents. The reverence of the event has surely changed since I graduated. You would think, that this High School Graduation may have been the first in the family.........EVER!!!
College Graduation: Yes, I will attend and contribute. But ONLY, if the graduate has planned for their future by studying a relevant subject.
If you decided to major in "Appalachian Studies" or "Medieval Poetry" or "VCR Repair," I'm not going to be funding your debt recovery.
My position is clear. Study something that is relevant and I WILL invest in your future.
Otherwise, I may give you invaluable life advice as I offer you a sarcastic: "Well Done."
