May 20, 2013 - PPM - Profiles Discouraged

This week's PET PEEVE MONDAY (PPM) concerns the OVER-REACTION to terrorist activities.

After 9/11, we couldn't take box cutters on planes. Not sure WHY you would have had a box cutter unless you were cutting boxes or laying carpet... ON THE PLANE. Ironically, steel knives were still available in First Class for a long time after 9/11.

After Richard Reid unsuccessfully tried to light his shoe on in fire, we all had to remove our shoes prior to boarding a flight.

All liquids, gels and aerosols must be in 3.4 ounce (100ml) or smaller containers. However you could take 10 containers of a liquid as long as EACH container was under 3.4 ounces. DUH Award.

Now, backpacks are prohibited from Marathon races and sporting events because of the Boston bombings on April 15 of this year.

Just this week, some Islamic jihadists hacked an off-duty British soldier to death in broad daylight. The British then recommended that soldiers shouldn't wear uniforms unless on base. REALLY?

At what point do we address the purveyors of the risk, versus the unrealistic scenario of the risk?

How about we target the people that WANT to hurt us?

But whatever you do, DO NOT profile. Instead of "Profiles in Courage", it is PROFILES DISCOURAGED.

We're all in trouble when someone tries to board a plane with a bomb shoved up his arse.
