June 2, 2015 - LOSER - Wally Pipp

The week we will not celebrate the LOSER OF THE WEEK.  We will instead commemorate what happened 90 years ago on June 2, 1925.

The LOSER the first week of June 1925 was Wally Pipp.

Pipp showed up at Yankee Stadium on June 2, 1925 with a headache, and asked the team's trainer for two aspirin. Miller Huggins, the Yankees' manager, noticed this, and said "Wally, take the day off. We'll try that kid Gehrig at first today and get you back in there tomorrow."

Gehrig played well and became the Yankees' new starting first baseman for the next 2,120 games.

The rest, as they say, IS HISTORY.

Whenever any of my ball players have a minor injury, I always say fine.  I put in another player and announce to the umpire that they are going in for Wally Pipp.  They say, "Who is Wally Pipp?"
I say GOOGLE it.

They miraculously recover.
