March 4, 2013 - PPM - High Valued Recruits
This week's PET PEEVE MONDAY (PPM) is about College Recruits.
A couple of weeks ago we "Celebrated" National Signing Day.
All the national AND local TV stations were focused on "who was going where."
I agree that college athletics and especially college football is big in this country.
My PEEVE is why we don't celebrate the signing our our high school scholars.
These people will be OUR FUTURE long after the sun has set on the athlete's college experience. As a matter of fact, the spotlight will just begin to illuminate AFTER these scholars take their college educations and start to apply what they have learned into their field of choice.
I would love to see a press event when a HS senior has three textbooks and playfully decides on which university to attend AND what they will study.
As a disclaimer! I was able to participate as a proud parent when my son signed a letter of intent to play college baseball. But I would have been as proud had it been an academic scholarship.
Everyone wants to argue that their school has the #1 recruiting class this year. It doesn't matter, till they prove it ON THE FIELD.
Always remember: The #1 Recruiting class of all time has to be THE Mickey Mouse Club Season 6 with Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Ryan Gosling, Keri Russell. (pictured below)
Just saying.

We do under value our children that have non-athletic strengths.
