Dec. 23, 2013 - PPM - Duck, Duck, (A&E) Lose

This week’s PET PEEVE MONDAY (PPM) is the “Media Blow-up” over Duck Dynasty.  Let me start with a disclaimer, I have NEVER seen a TV reality show, including “Duck Dynasty.”

That said, the latest media blow-up was about how someone from Duck Dynasty said something “offensive” to someone.  Keep in mind, that there were no nanny murders or blonde co-ed disappearances this week. (i.e. SSLLOOOWWW news week.)  The actual “offensive” comments are 3 months old.

The comments were taken from a GQ interview.  Granted, based upon the interview candidate and target audience, the “interview” would have should have been performed by “Field and Stream.”

The headline that is buried is that:  a straight man finds women more attractive and quotes Biblical scripture as his reason.

Phil Robertson, the Duck Dynasty patriarch, directly quoted Corinthians 6:9-20.  Many say, if you have a problem with this, you should take it up with God.  Sure, Phil elaborated on the scripture, but he was sincere, not racist or homophobic.

Duck Dynasty is produced and shown on the A&E network.  The A&E network has suspended Phil indefinitely for his comments.  Maybe A&E shouldn't do reality shows if they don’t want REALITY.

The Robertson family has united their opposition to the A&E suspension and decided to all go on “strike” until Phil is exonerated.

The latest development is that the Reverend Jessie Jackson has demanded to speak with A&E executives.

I wonder if the reality trailblazers, the Kardashians would stand behind Kim?  Then again, MANY others have been behind Kim.  (That was a joke – but I don’t dare ask for a rim shot.)

In the end (pun again), A&E is the big loser.  They have painted themselves into a corner.  Walmart has sold out of all Duck Dynasty merchandize.  There is a large social Media backing for Duck Dynasty.

The “Duck” family are now free agents and can write their own TV contracts, endorsement deals, and merchandising contracts.

Well done Liberal media.  Capitalism WINS again.

I would guess the end game will be A&E backing down as they fall off of their moral high horse when it trips over the lost profits.
